5-19-20 Dinosaur Fossils Activity

INSTRUCTIONS

Materials:

  • “Dirt” playdough
  • Dinosaur toys
  • Assorted dry pasta

Preparation

Remove playdough from container and knead until soft. If it seems too crumbly and hard, you can revive it by kneading in a little bit of hot water or oil until the texture improves.

Play Option 1

Use the dinosaur toys to make different impressions in the playdough. You can also bury the dinosaurs and dig them out, just like an archeologist looks for fossils.

Play Option 2

Older children might want to use the pasta as dinosaur “bones” and use them to construct their own dinosaurs in the playdough.

You can let them free play or give them challenges for guided play.

Guided play ideas:

  • Show your child a picture of a dinosaur and prompt them to create it out of pasta.
  • Have them create a dinosaur with the pasta and then match it to a picture of a dinosaur.
  • You create a dinosaur with pasta and have your child guess which dinosaur you created.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY

Color some pages in your “Dinosaurs” book and read to learn about different dinosaurs. Older children can also practice tracing the names of the dinosaurs!
